Our Mission:

Communication shapes how people understand one another, build relationships, share information, tell stories, participate in communities, and respond to a changing world. The faculty of the SUNY Fredonia Department of Communication believe that effective communication requires creativity, critical thinking, ethical judgment, and an understanding of the audiences and communities we serve.

As communication continues to evolve across professions, platforms, and technologies, we believe students should understand not only how to communicate effectively, but also why their choices matter. Across Strategic and Professional Communication, Journalism, and Digital Film Production, we encourage students to think critically and creatively, engage diverse perspectives, evaluate information carefully, and consider issues of accuracy, credibility, representation, accessibility, and ethics.

We believe it is our responsibility as faculty to provide students with the perspective, knowledge, and experiences they need to make thoughtful choices about their work and about the communicators and professionals they are becoming. We support communication that is ethical, informed, creative, and responsible, and we encourage students to consider how their work contributes to their professions, their communities, and their relationships with others.
