FALL SEMESTER
- "Build a Safer, More Compassionate World
Forum – Five Years Later, a Moment to Reflect on the Consequences of
the September 11, 2001 Attacks in the United States"
Coordinated by Ivani Vassoler, Department of
Political Science. Event date: Monday, September 11, 2006 in the
Williams Center, starting at 10 a.m. 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.:
Town-hall style discussion with a diverse panel that will include
faculty members with expertise in international politics and national
security. The discussion will open with a presentation of the
documentary, "In Their Own Voices”, a 12-minute film profiling some of
the families who responded to their loss on September 11 by reaching out
internationally. 12:00 – 2:00 p.m.: Luncheon with Kristin Steuerle
Swanson as a keynote speaker.
Dr. Steuerle
Swanson is a pediatrician in South Carolina. On September 11, 2001, she
lost her mother, Norma Steuerle, who was on Flight 77, which was flown
into the Pentagon. Determined to generate good in the world out of the
tragedy, Dr. Steuerle Swanson, together with other individuals who
lost relatives in the terrorist acts, formed Our Voices
Together – a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that
encourages international projects, and promotes understanding to respond
to terrorism towards a safer and more compassionate future. 2:00 –
4:00 p.m.: International Fair showcasing study abroad opportunities in
the developing world organized by the Office of International Education
and Study Abroad Programs. The town-hall discussion and the
International Fair are free and open to the campus community. The
luncheon and keynote speaker is open to the campus community and

- "The Paperless University: Myth or
Reality?"
Coordinated by Dawn Eckenrode, Kerrie Fergen Wilkes, and Darryl Coleman,
Reed Library. Event date: Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at 7:00 in
McEwen G26. This panel discussion will focus on the effect changing
technologies are having on the traditional landscape of higher
education. The panel will be asked to reflect on how academic research
and publishing is being revolutionized by innovative projects such as
open access academic publications, E-books, and Google’s library
project, which aims to digitize books from some of our country’s most
prestigious research libraries. The panel will feature talented members
of our campus community and the larger SUNY community, including:
Educational Technologist, Janet Mayer; Professor Michael Jabot from the
College of Education; Distinguished Teaching Professor Ted Steinberg;
and former president of State University of New York’s Library
Association, Bill Drew. Professor Joseph Chilberg, Department of
Communication, will moderate the panel discussion. In conjunction with
the panel discussion, Reed Library will be launching a pilot project
that will provide students and faculty with the opportunity to checkout
E-books and E-Book readers from the library’s collection. The event is

SPRING SEMESTER
- "Convocation Proposal - Dr. Tamar Jacobson"
Coordinated by Mira Tetkowski Berkley, Coordinator Early Childhood
Education. Event date: Thursday, April 19, 2007 at 7:00 p.m.,
location to be determined.
Dr. Tamar Jacobson will be invited as a campus-wide keynote
presenter and to be part of a panel discussion. Dr. Jacobson is an
Early Childhood educator with a rich and varied background who has spent
over 25 years teaching and caring for young children, their families,
and the adults who care for them. She is the author of,
"Confronting our Discomfort" published by Heinemann. Currently she coordinates the Early
Childhood program at Rider University, New Jersey. Dr. Jacobson will
speak to the ways that society can meet the challenge and responsibility
to today's young children for their positive and productive future. The
event is free and the public is invited to attend. For more information
