Michael Colgrass, award-winning composer (Pulitzer Prize, Emmy Award, Guggenheim Fellowships, Barlow Prize, among others) joins The State University of New York at Fredonia for a multi-day artist residency as part of the 2014-15 Convocation Series. In 'Life Levels Alignment' Colgrass presents a spatial exercise showing you how to align your primary activity with your capabilities, your values, your identity and your spiritual self--all in relation to your environment. This exercise helps people focus priorities and even make career decisions. The Michael Colgrass residency is sponsored by the following Student Association groups: Percussion Guild, Woodwind Association, and Conductor's Guild; a grant from the 2014 - 2015 Convocation Series, and the School of Music. Free.

Paula Holcomb, conductor. The Wind Ensemble will feature artists Nadina Mackie Jackson, bassoon and Michael Colgrass, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer. Repertoire will include Holst's 'Second Suite in F,' 'The Promise of the Living' from 'The Tender Land' by Copland/Singleton, Wilson's 'Avatar,' featuring Nadina Mackie Jackson on bassoon, and 'Old Churches' and 'Winds of Nagual' by Michael Colgrass. Mr. Colgrass will discuss his works prior to their performance. The artists are also involved with other events on campus including the Percussion Guild, Conductors Guild and Double Reed Day. The Fredonia Saxophone Ensemble will celebrate the 200th birthday of Adolphe Sax with a concert of works by Bach, Kastner, Dankner, Dvorak, Matitia and more. Members of the University Chorus will join us for a special performance of Bach's Opening Chorus to the Cantata BWV 99. Saxophone alumni will participate in a joint performance of a special arrangement made for the occasion of Lauridsen's 'O Magnum Mysterium.'
