The Main Art Gallery in the Michael C. Rockefeller Arts Center is dedicated to the presentation of educationally supportive exhibitions for the benefit of SUNY art students, the campus at large, and the local community. The gallery also serves the in-house needs of the Fredonia Department of Visual Arts with exhibits of recent work by students and faculty. Graduationg senior thesis shows are held at the conclusion of each semester.
Exhibitions of work by professional artists from off campus are also shown in the Main Art Gallery. All media and thematic subjects are considered. Of particular interest is work which addresses cross-cultural, ethnic and gender issues. Each exhibition is widely promoted both on campus and off with news releases and announcement cards. Shows open with a catered reception for both students and the public at large.
The Emmitt Christian Gallery is on the second floor of the Rockefeller Arts Center. This small gallery is devoted exclusively to the exhibition of student works. Each semester a series of two week long shows feature the works of advanced art students in all media. Occasional group shows of work done for a specific course are included in the sequence. Students must prepare the space, design the installation, hang the show, create publicity and host their own reception. This experience serves as preparation for professional exhibitions after graduation.
