Communication Analysis Assignment

Installment III (4/20)

The third installment will require using course material to EXPLAIN the things that influenced the communicator’s messages, responses, and results of episode interaction.

EPISODE EVALUATION: Explaining the Outcomes

FEEDBACK (15 pts.): You will be given three lines/turns of the interaction that are responses of one communicator to another. Classify the type of feedback/response for each using the response types covered in class and explain why it is a case of the classified type. See articles on Communicating at Work and Defensive Communication

(e. g., indirect aggression, disconfirming-tangential, supportive-descriptive, etc.) (Note:  lines of feedback typically can be classified in more than one way—PICK ONLY ONE--see web page example for format)

Your answer must include:

Line of dialogue (use ONLY assigned lines)

Classification of line (e g., indirect aggression, disconfirming-tangential, supportive-descriptive, etc.)

Explanation for classification selected—why does the line/turn exemplify the type of classification? [repeat these three steps for each assigned line of dialogue]

EPISODE OUTCOME (5 pts.): Determine the OUTCOME of the episode:

Task/Purpose Outcome: based on what was described in installments I & II.

  1. What was the initiator’s:

·        purpose(s)

·        was it fulfilled at end of episode?

·        Why or why not?

  1. What was the participant’s:

·        purpose(s)

·        was it fulfilled at end of episode?

·        Why or why not?

Relational Outcome: what was the state or condition of the relationship at the end of the episode?

EXPLANATION (30 pts.): use three explanatory statements from the list of theories or explanatory statements provided over the listserv to explain how the episode communication worked to create the episode outcomes. Do one explanation at a time covering the questions below.

1.  Quote the complete theory/explanatory statement from text, lecture, or article it came

from. Cite the source quoted, then summarize it in our own words.

2.  Explain and support how the selected theory/explanation relates to the episode by:

·        Identify the messages/interaction from the episode that are related to the selected theory/explanation and why it  applies to the theory/statement. Be thorough and consider both communicators’ message behaviors.

·        Explain how your explanation contributes to understanding either task and/or relational outcome of the episode.
