In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, the Native American Student Union, the SUNY Native American Western Consortium, and the Fredonia English Department have been working to put together a line-up of events open to the public. The first is a film series that runs through November at 7:30 on Monday nights: 11/03, 11/10 and 11/17. The screenings are located in Jewett Hall 101. Soda and pizza are provided.
The films are:11/03 Incident at Oglala, 11/10 Trudell, and 11/17 Our Spirits Don't Speak English: Indian Boarding School.
There will also be poetry readings by two Native poets: Joy Harjo (Mvskogee Creek) and Allison Hedge Coke (Huron/Tsalagi).
Internationally acclaimed poet/musician, Joy Harjo, will give a poetry reading on November 12th at 7:00 pm in 209 McEwen. This event is free to SUNY Fredonia students and $5.00 to the general public. The Fredonia bookstore has a fine selection of Harjo's book (as well as Hedge Coke's).
Poet/essayist/activist, Allison Hedge Coke, will give a poetry reading on November 18th at 7:30 pm in 101 Jewett Hall. This is event is free to the public. Hedge Coke will also give a craft talk at 2:00 pm in the 4th floor tower lounge in the Reed Library. All are welcome.
