American Studies News, Fall 2005

Hey, everyone. I'll be putting announcements on this page having to do with course requirements, changes in these web pages, and other matters. I recommend looking here every time you visit the course web site!

12/7/05
Hey all, here are my office hours for the rest of the semester:

12/2/05
OK, folks, thanks for your patience in dealing with my family emergencies changing our schedule this week. My office hours this week were mixed up as a result; M was normal but T was 10:30-12, 2-5:30, W and Th were cancelled, and today's are 10-12, 1-2. I'll have xtra office hours to make up for that. Plus, since I had to cancel W's class, I've changed the assignments around for F and M. Students will have the option of turning in Essay III M 12/5 if they want the extra time, and in class we'll discuss M/W's readings on F and F/M's readings on M. Sorry for the inconvenience!

11/15/05
I'll be in the office this week normal hours M and then T 8-10:30, 2-4; W 10-12, 1-2; Th 9-12, 2-3; F 10-12, 1-2. Also, please note the change in the due date for the third critical essay and the addition of a fifth option.

11/8/05
I've revised the assignment sheet for the third critical essay slightly. Please note the changes as you work on the essay.

10/27/05
Hey all, due to unavoidable emergency daddy duties, I had to change my Th OH to 5-6, as I announced over email, so today (F) I'm in from 10-2.

10/26/05
The assignment sheet for the third critical essay is now available.

10/24/05
Office hours this week: M 9-2; T 10-12; W 1-2; Th 9-12; F 11-2.

10/17/05
Office hours this week: M 10:30-2; T 9:30-12; W 11-12, 1-2; Th 8-9:30, 10:50-12; F 12-2.

I've put the assignment sheet for the final project on the course web site so people can start thinking about it early in the semester, as well.

Finally, I've put comments on patterns in Essay I on the course Blackboard site, and revised the assignment sheet for Essay II a bit. Remember, if you skipped Essay I, you'll need to do both Essay II and Essay III. If you did Essay I, you can do both others for extra credit and dropping the lowest grade, or you can skip one of the last two.

10/10/05
Office hours this week: M 8-2; T 9-11:30.

10/4/05
Hey all, three things: 1) I've put the assignment sheet for the second critical essay up on the course web site, check it out; even though the due date is pushed back to 10/24, you can certainly start thinking about the options and preparing for one or more; 2) I've updated the main page to reflect the changed due date for the second critical essay and the changed time when discussion questions are due; 3) Professors Filipink, Rushboldt, and I want to show a movie the week before Thanksgiving Break, and we want you all to choose it, so each of you please send me an email before Fall Break with your top 2 picks for movies that relate to the American Experience, that allow us to connect the courses in it, and that can be related to this year's convocation theme, Leaving Global Footprints; 4) I'll be having extra office hours tomorrow 11-12 (in addition to my usual 1-2 time) and Friday 11-2 (adding onto my usual 1-2 time).

9/28/05
Extra office hours this week were today 10-12 (in addition to the usual 1-2, which I came late tyo due to a department meeting that ran over) and will be Th 2-3 (and possibly later--by appointment--in addition to the usual 9-12 OH) and F 10-1 (and possibly earlier--by appointment--in addition to the usual 1-2 OH). There will be more office hours next week to make up for the fact that I had to cancel office hours Tuesday, due to my moderating a panel for the conference Fredonia is co-organizing down at Chautauqua Institution.

9/21/05
Hey all, I'm having office hours today from 9:30-11:30 to make up a little bit for cancelling office hours tomorrow and Friday (I'm heading to Albany for a union meeting). I'll have some extra hours next week, as well.

9/14/05
Whoops, I never put advice on the discussion questions or a link to the course Blackboard site on the course web site. Now I have. Remember, once you login to Blackboard (using the ID/password you can find in the personal information area of the Your Connection web site), do a search for "AMST202" and click on the "enroll" button if you haven't already enrolled. Once I get your request and enroll you, the course will appear in your "My Courses" area the next time you log in to Blackboard.

9/13/05
Hey all, please see the main page for a slight change to the critical essay assignment. You'll have an opportunity to do three instead of two and have your lowest grade dropped. The first essay is due W 9/21.

8/30/05
Due to a small listserv snafu, some of the people who signed up for the list earliest accidentally got signed up for an old list, which then got deleted. So if you got a "welcome to the listserv" message last week but didn't receive any messages from your peers late last week or early this week, be sure to go through the subscription process again. And if you're having trouble, please contact me and/or forward me any error messages you're getting.

8/26/05
Welcome to the course! Please feel free to explore the site to see what links are active. As more become active, I'll let you know here.
