Harlem Renaissance News

Hey, everyone. I'll be putting announcements on this page having to do with course requirements, changes in the web site, and other matters. I recommend looking here every time you visit the course web site--at least once a week.

5/14/03
Hey all, a quick note on procedures for turning in and getting back your final projects. I've put up envelopes for each of my classes on the bulletin board to the left of my office door (Fenton 240) and you can turn your final project in there or leave it in my mailbox in the English Department office (Fenton 277). When you turn in your project, please attach a sticky letting me know what level of comments you want (just a grade, a grade with short comments, a grade with normal comments, a grade with detailed comments). If you want it back quickly, attach a stamped, self-addressed envelope to your paper along with the sticky. If not, you can email me for an appointment to pick it up from me at the beginning of next semester (simon@fredonia.edu) or just drop by during my regular office hours (see my home page for my fall 2003 hours).

I'll be here from 3-ish to 4-ish today in addition to the hours listed below and in and out of the office over the next two days. If you absolutely need to talk with me or see me, the best way to reach me is to call my home number, which I'll be sending out over the course listserv.

5/9/03
Hey all, just wanted to remind you about our class meeting on Wednesday at 1:30 pm in the regular classroom. We'll be wrapping up the course, doing course evaluations, and giving you a chance to workshop a draft of your final project with a partner in the class.

I also wanted to let you know about my office hours next week: M12-4, T 10-2, W 10:30-1:30, and by appointment. I'll be unavailable on Tuesday afternoon after 2, but everything else is fairly flexible.

Thanks for a great semester. Hang in there during the home stretch and keep pushing.

5/6/03
Hey all, a few last-second emergencies have come up during my office hours this week, so I wanted to post my revised hours for the week! M 1-2, 4-6; T 3:30-6; W 1-4; F 10-11, 1-3.

4/28/03
I've made some revisions to the final project assignment sheet. Please let me know if you have any questions about the project that I haven't answered on the page, in class, in a meeting, or over email, and be sure to get feedback from me on what you're planning for the fginal project by the end of classes.

4/22/03
Change to my office hours this week--my regular W 1-4 hours willbe interrupted by my leaving the office from 2-? on a necessary errand. I'll be available by appointment late Thursday afternoon and F 1-3 to make up for this.

4/9/03
Change to my office hours this week--my regular W 1-4 hours willbe replaced by hours on W 2:30-4:30, Th 2-4, and F 10-11, 1-3.

3/28/03
Please click here for a rough draft of the assignment sheet for the final project.

3/27/03
A note about my office hours next week. First off, I'm holding additional hours to it being course selection week. I'll be in the office M10-11, 1-5, T 11-4:30, W, 10-11, 1-4:30, Th 1-5, and F 10-11, 1-3. However, I need to make sure my advisees are able to meet with em next week. So I've put a sign-up sheet on my door, and ask you to only sign up for a slot no further than one day in advance of the time you're there. So if you come on Friday to make an appointment with me next week, you can only sign up for Monday slots that are open. If you come on Monday, you can only sign up for slots that are open that day or Tuesday. And so on. I encourage everyone planning to revise their critical essays to see me before you turn it in (no later than next Friday). Please take advantage of the additional hours next week to do that! Thanks.

3/5/03
Due to a meeting, I have to reschedule my office hours for today: 10-11, 2:30-4:30.

3/3/03
Please note the corrections on the main page to the page numbers of the readings from Du Bois and Hughes for W 3/12. My apologies for the error on your syllabi. I've also updated the listing on the main page of those who have contacted me with their preferences for the group project. I've also added the reserve readings page to the course web site, which I delayed putting up until I received confirmation from Reed Library that they received my request. Only difficulty is that the person whom I originally sent my requests to retired last fall, so there's been a delay in processing them. Hopefully they'll be available before spring break.

2/28/03
I've finally gotten the links page up and running; extra credit for anyone who proposes a site to be added that I decide to add to the page!

2/21/03
Just a reminder that the due date for the critical essay has been pushed back to 5 pm Monday, February 24.

2/17/03
I've revised the main page to include names of people who made requests for their group projects over the past few days. My advice on 2/12 still holds for those who haven't yet signed up for a group. I'm planning to meet with Groups I and II this week, Group III next week, Group IV the following week, and so on...so members of those groups should set up appointments with me two weeks before their presentations. For this week, Groups I and II will have to take into account the following piece of news.

I have to revise my office hours for this week in light of meetings I can't miss: instead of my normal hours, I will be available M 1-2, 3-4:30; T 1-5:30; W 2:30-4:30, and F 10-11, and by appointment Tuesday morning, Thursday all day, and (ugh!) Friday before 10.

2/12/03
I've updated the main page in light of new requests from you all as to your presentation groups and dates. For those who haven't yet let me know what their top 3 choices are, please consult the main page to keep track of which groups are complete (those without "...." after the names) and which still have openings. The longer you wait, the fewer options you have. I'd like to hear from everyone by the beginning of next week on this. Thanks.

2/11/03
Welcome to the course! Please explore the site to see what links are active. As more become active, I'll let you know here!
