CCC Upper-Level Requirement

1. Retain and combine GCP Part IIIA and IIIB courses. Call this "the upper-level CCC category."

2. Adjust the criteria of IIIA by eliminating need for international/cross cultural element in IIIA. (This helps natural sciences propose courses for the category.)
Students must fulfill the requirement through one of the following:

A. Successfully completing 6 credits outside their primary majors within the upper-level CCC category.

B. Successfully completing a second major, minor, concentration, education certification, or accredited study-abroad program. The second major, minor, or concentration cannot be in the same department as the primary major.

C. Successfully completing a major severely impacted by the upper level CCC category that has requested and been granted a programmatic waiver of the requirement.

Rationale:

(a) To ensure that SUNY Fredonia students explore significant issues in depth outside their primary majors.

(b) Upper-level courses fulfilling this goal should include interdisciplinary, international, or cross-cultural elements.

(c) Students completing second majors, minors, concentrations, or education certification programs are presumed to have completed two or more appropriate upper-level courses outside their primary majors.

(d) Students completing an accredited study-abroad program are presumed to have extensive international or cross-cultural experiences that are the functional equivalents of some of the upper-level CCC category aspirations.

(e) In a few major programs, the prospects of students graduating within four years will be seriously jeopardized by this requirement. Such programs may petition the CCC committee for programmatic waivers of the upper-level CCC category.

Process:

(a) All courses numbered 300 or above currently in GCP Part IIIA and IIIB, with the exception of those already accepted in established CCC categories, will be included automatically in the upper-level CCC category.

(b) Faculty, through their chairs, can request that their GCP Part III course be removed from the upper-level CCC category.

(c) Additional courses numbered 300 or above may be submitted for inclusion into the upper-level CCC category under the established GCP Part III criteria and guidelines (with the adjustment to GCP Part IIIA noted above).

(d) Students must complete at least 7 of the basic 10 SUNY GER requirements prior to taking courses in the upper-level CCC category.
