Revised General Education Program Guidelines
III. Foreign Languages
For approval of a course in the area of Foreign Languages, the instructor
will provide a comprehensive description of the course, addressing its general
aims and general requirements, including:
- evidence the the course will enable students to achieve basic
proficiency in the understanding and use of a foreign language,
emphasizing:
- a focus on communication, the notions and functions that students need
to express themselves in various situation they will encounter in a
foreign country in their target language;
- the use of grammar as a way of organizing language forms for
communication;
- the presentation of structures and vocabulary in context;
- evidence of testing speaking and listening comprehension;
- evidence of writing skills that test grammar, using techniques that
stress active command of the language.
- evidence of emphasis on knowledge of the distinctive features of
culture(s) associated with the language being studied, including;
- examples of cultural differences and similarities;
- presentation and testing of knowledge values and traditions of the
foreign culture being studied;
- A brief description of the methods to be used to assess student
understanding of the course's subject matter and student attainment of the
abilities and understandings listed above, as well as a method for
providing for course improvement.
