CCC Foreign Language Requirement
3-Credit Requirement

Applies to all undergraduate students except those completing programs granting a B.A. degree who are admitted as freshmen in Fall 2004 and later or as transfers in Fall 2006 and later. These students have a 6-credit Foreign Language requirement.

A. Students must fulfill the learning outcomes of the Foreign Language Requirement, CCC Category 3 (3 credits) by at least one of the following

  1. Satisfactorily completing an appropriate 3 credit foreign language course at SUNY Fredonia.
  2. Transferring an appropriate 3-credit foreign language from another qualified institution of higher learning.
  3. Receiving an appropriate score on either the AP (3 or higher) or CLEP (50th percentile or higher) externally-administered standardized test for foreign language.
  4. Earning a score of 85 or higher on a foreign language Regents Checkpoint B exam.
  5. Satisfactorily completing an appropriate 3-credit American Sign Language (ASL) course from another qualified institution of higher learning, ONLY IF the student is enrolled in a program leading  to certification in elementary or secondary education, or programs leading to careers where there is likely to be significant contact with the hearing-impaired {e.g., Early Childhood Education, Elementary (Childhood) Education, Middle Childhood Education, Secondary (Adolescent) Education, Speech Education, Music Education, Communications Disorders, Speech and Hearing Handicapped Education, Health Services Administration, Social Work, Sociology].

B. The Modern Language department will use its best professional judgment in determining when students have fulfilled the learning outcomes of the foreign language requirement in ways other than those sketched above. Moreover, under appropriate circumstances, waivers of the requirement will be granted by the director of general education after consultation with the department.

C. The Modern Language department recognizes that students cannot fulfill the learning outcomes of the foreign language requirement, nor may the director of general education waive the requirement, solely on the basis of course work completed in secondary school.

D. Students will be placed in the level of language course appropriate wo their performance on prior coursework, if any.

*"Modern Languages" and "Foreign Languages" are synonyms herein. While SUNY Fredonia uses the former, the SUNY Provost's office uses the latter.

Notes:

(1) The department recommends that within two years, the foreign language requirement become 6 credits.

(2) The SUNY Provost also permits the requirement to be fulfilled by satisfactory performance on a locally-administered standardized test. The department rejects this option because it is administratively cumbersome, weakens the modern language requirement, and is not necessary to relieve resource allocation concerns.
