Dr. Walther M. Barnard Walther Barnard's (Ph.D. Penn. State, 1965)
research specialties are low temperature geochemistry and mineralogy. His research involves studies of fumerole
deposits of volcanic vents in Hawaii. He is an expert on the history of the Mauna Loa volcano and has authored a
three-volume monograph about that volcano.
Dr. Barnard teaches courses in geochemistry, earth science, meteorology (weather & climate), crystallography, and mineralogy. He was the chairperson of the department from 1986 to 1997.
