LOCAL ATTRACTIONS
Fredonia is not what you might consider the typical location for an Urban History Conference. Far from being an urban center, Fredonia is actually a small, pleasant village. Parts of neighboring Dunkirk, a small city which prospered during the heyday of post-war steel production in the U.S., have somewhat of an urban feel to them. Fortunately, the History Department at SUNY Fredonia has an abundance of faculty who specialize in urban history and who do their best to keep an urban sensibility alive and well!
You may not be able to indulge in many urban delights during your stay in the Fredonia area. We don’t have a Starbucks on every corner; however, we do have one on campus. In addition, there are several restaurants and cafes within walking distance of the White Inn or the Clarion Hotel. Both hotels also have restaurants and bars.
On Thursday evening, from 5:00–10:00, we will meet informally at the Ellicottville Brewing Company for drinks and dinner. Lunch will be served at the conference on both Friday and Saturday. After the keynote address on Friday, we will also serve dinner. The cost of the dinner is included in the registration fee for conference panelists. Dinner for those attending the conference but not participating on a panel will cost $20.00.
