Mathematics Teacher Education Programs Pass NCTM Review on the
First Try
As part of SUNY Fredonia's NCATE review of Teacher Education programs,
academic departments that support teacher education programs were required
to submit their programs for review to the appropriate NCATE affiliated
bodies. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) reviewed
the program descriptions supplied by the Mathematics Department for
Adolescence Education, Middle Childhood Mathematics Specialist and
Childhood Education Mathematics Concentration. The programs were approved
without rejoinder on the first submission.
In particular, the reviewers noted that MATH 310 - Reading and
Writing Mathematics is a unique course and applauded its inclusion
in the program. They also commended the faculty for the high quality
of their course syllabi and their efforts to involve students in
the mathematics teaching profession through membership in NCTM
and its state affiliate, the Association of Mathematics Teachers
of New York State.
This is an important first step toward the ultimate goal of NCATE
Accreditation for all campus Teacher Education programs by
2004. Congratulations to Dr. Howard for his leadership in this process and
to all who participated.
