Mathematics at Fredonia

The faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences view teaching as their primary responsibility. Classes are taught by full time staff members in classes whose size, at the junior/senior level, rarely exceeds 35 and is frequently closer to 20. Class sizes at the freshman level rarely exceed 35. Faculty hold regular office hours and encourage students to visit them.

The department offers a program in Mathematics - Adolescence Education that prepares students who intend to seek initial certification to teach in the secondary schools of New York State. During the Fall 2001 semester, there were approximately 106 students enrolled in this program. Six students completed this program during the 2001 calendar year. As part of its ongoing committment to the preparation of teachers in mathematics, the department introduced a unique program, the B. S. in Mathematics - Middle Childhood Education Mathematics Specialist. Both the Adolescence Education and Middle School Specialist programs in mathematics have been designed to meet the newly adopted teacher certification requirements of the New York State Board of Regents.

The Mathematics - Liberal Arts program prepares students to pursue graduate work in mathematics, statistics or operations research or to enter the workforce in mathematics- related occupations. During the Fall 2001 semester, this program enrolled about 26 students and there were 4 graduates during the 2001 calendar year. In the Fall 2001 semester, the department introduced two new programs in applied mathematics: Applied Mathematics - Economics Option and Applied Mathematics - Statistics/Operations Research Option. No matter which program you select, the small classes and committment of the faculty to teaching mean that you will have ample opportunity for personal attention.
