MASTER OF SCIENCE IN EDUCATION: MATHEMATICS
Effective Fall 2001
This graduate program is intended for teachers who seek to
complete New York State requirements for permanent certification to
teach mathematics in the middle or secondary schools of New York State. Entry
in this program is restricted to those with a Bachelor's degree in
mathematics and provisional certification to teach mathematics in the
secondary schools of New York State or completion of the Middle
Childhood Mathematics Specialist Program at SUNY Fredonia.
Thirty hours are required as follows:
- A course in research methods
- A minimum of three courses covering three of the following categories:
- (a) historical, philosophical or comparative foundations of education
- (b) design and evaluation of mathematics curricula
- (c) instructional methods
- (d) use of educational technology in the teaching and learning of
mathematics
- (e) psychological foundations of education
- A minimum of four courses covering four of the following categories:
- (a) algebra or analysis
- (b) geometry or topology
- (c) number theory, probability or statistics
- (d) history or philosophy of mathematics
- (e) applications of mathematics
- (f) any approved course in mathematics
- MAED 602 Mathematics Education Seminar
- MAED 690 Graduate Project
The student's advisor or the department chair must approve any course
taken to satisfy these requirements.
