Audiological Evaluations
Hearing tests (audiometric evaluations) are routinely done in a sound treated
room so that outside noises will not interfere with the reliability of the test results.
The audiologist, prior to placing you in the sound room, will examine the outer portion
of the ear for abnormalities and the presence of excessive ear wax. During the test
you will wear headphones and will be instructed to listen to a series of different
pitched tones. Your job is to correctly identify the lowest volume that you can hear
the different pitched tones.
Part of the evaluation will involve various speech tests that will reinforce the
tone portion of the hearing test and also identify your ability to identify words at
a comfortable volume.
Your responses are recorded on an audiogram, which will help the audiologist determine
the type and degree of the hearing loss.
