Overview of Internships

Internships in Sport Management & Exercise ScienceStudent intern

Students majoring in Sport Management or Exercise Science are required to complete an internship in a related field.  This experiential education component provides students with the opportunity to develop skills, explore career directions, and turn theory into practice in the professional working environment.

SUNY Fredonia Sport Management and Exercise Science students have completed internships with the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres, and Jamestown Jammers, as well as other outstanding local and regional businesses and professionals.

Prior to embarking on an internship, Sport Management and Exercise Science majors must successfully complete SPMG 298, a pre-internship course. This classroom course prepares students for their internship experience through exploration of topics such as:  resume writing, interview protocols, expectations in a professional setting, understanding the student internship contract and evaluations, and the use and limitations of web-based employment and career search services.

The 6-credit hour internship experience in Sport Management follows the North American Society for Sport Management (NAASM) and Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA) guidelines and requires 400 clock hours to complete.  Exercise Science students are required to complete an internship of 200 clock hours for 3-credit hours.  Students may also complete additional internship experiences, with advisor permission, for up to 24 credit hours.
