Department of Sport Management & Exercise Science:Student Learning GoalsA. COMMON LEARNING GOALS: Students in the Department of Sport Management & Exercise Science will obtain a breadth of understanding about sport, health, wellness and human performance within and across diverse populations and apply this understanding in academic and professional settings:
B. BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN SPORT MANAGEMENT: At the completion of the Sport Management core and elective courses, students will demonstrate competence in the following areas: • Communication & Leadership Skills
• Foundational Knowledge & Information Literacy
• Global Issues & Technology Skills
• Social, Psychological, and Philosophical Bases of Sport and Exercise
C. BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN EXERCISE SCIENCE At the completion of the Exercise Science core and elective courses, students will: • Achieve a working knowledge of the major fields of exercise science – anatomy, physiology, kinesiology and biomechanics, exercise nutrition, exercise prescription, and research. They are capable of solving problems that require combining concepts from multiple fields. • Understand the research process/methods in the Exercise Science Field .This encompasses design, conduct, interpretation, and evaluation of human movement science research including the design procedures for controlled experiments, interpretation of data graphical and statistical, and performing error analysis. • Students will demonstrate skillful operation of standard laboratory equipment such as fitness assessment software, fitness testing equipment, Dartfish video analysis equipment, treadmills, and biometric analysis equipment. They will demonstrate an understanding of the limitations of the instruments and equipment. • Understand and apply fundamental principles from the various sub-disciplines in Exercise Science to a variety of contexts (e.g., health, fitness, rehabilitation, education) which focus on Human Performance. • Use qualitative and quantitative reasoning and evidence, synthesizing information from a variety of origins to methodically and systematically solve problems and develop interventions in the exercise science domain. • Achieve a level of mathematical competency that enables them to solve a wide variety of problems in exercise science, these include fitness assessment, kinesiological and biomechanical analysis of human movement, statistical analysis, and research techniques for exercise science. • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in accordance with disciplinary standards. D. MINOR IN ATHLETIC COACHING At the completion of the Athletic Coaching minor, students will: • Be eligible to apply for a Professional Coaching Certificate through the New York Department of Education in order to be licensed in New York State to coach in the public schools and community recreation programs. • Assess emergency situations and, if necessary, apply CRP and/or First-Aid; • Posses a basic knowledge of health sciences, including anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, human growth and development and maturation, risk minimization, sport-specific fitness and conditioning, coaching psychology, and injury prevention; • Achieve a basic knowledge of coaching philosophies, strategies and techniques; principles and organization of associations and leagues, and identification of child maltreatment and abuse. |
