                      Major in Sport Management  

              Why Sport Management? As public interest has increased in the $350 billion sport industry, so have employment opportunities. The field of sport management offers extensive opportunities and a wide array of positions within and outside the sport industry.  Depending on your personal interests and talents, it is estimated that 50,000 job opportunities are available in sport related profit and nonprofit organizations and companies. The major in Sport Management at Fredonia State University prepares students for careers in a variety of public, private and commercial profit and not for profit sports organizations including education, recreation, professional leagues and related commercial sports companies.  

                 Does Sport Management suit my career goals? You should find yourself well suited for the sport management profession if who enjoy working with other people, possess a passion for sport, desire to learn more about the business side of sport, and enjoy teamwork. Typically, a student who completes a major in sport management has the potential to be employed in the following areas:  Sports Administration, Program Management (schools and the private sector), Stadium and facilities management, Sports Merchandising, Sports Reporting, Sporting Goods Sales, Sports Accounting, Sports Themed Restaurant Management, Sports Agent, Sports Journalism, Sports Marketing and Sales, Public Relations, Sports Concessions, Research, Video Technician.

                 An Overview of Fredonia State's Sport Management Program. Fredonia State University's Sport Management Major leads to a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management. The requirements for graduation include completion of 120 credit hours. Fifty-one credit hours in the major, forty-two hours in the core curriculum and twenty-three hours of pre-requisite and general elective courses.  

                The sport management career follows the protocols established by the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM), and the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA) to assure excellence in your sport management education. The program provides course content and practical experiences for both career development and further studies in sport.  

                These protocols include the development of knowledge, skills and attributes in the following content areas: social and cultural dimensions of sport, management and leadership, ethics, marketing, communication, budget, finance, legal aspects of sport and risk management, facility and event management, video technology, sport economics, sport governance.  The student also receives real world experience by participating in our pre-Internship and sports internship programs. An extensive variety of internships are available to sport management majors.

                Pre-internship and Professional Internship. It is the consensus of the sport management industry that an internship is among the most valuable experiences in the development of quality sport managers. Fredonia State University utilizes a pre-internship course to prepare students for their internship. Topic areas covered in the pre-internship include making professional contacts, writing resumes and cover letters, developing competencies in using online search engines, developing competencies in the use of Angel, setting work related goals and objectives, determining work expectations, developing skills in preparation for an interview, and exploration of the field for potential internship opportunities. The professional internship requires 400 clock hours under the supervision of a working professional. The internship is offered in cooperation with the campus Career Development Office. Our majors have access to hundreds of internship opportunities including the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres, Jamestown Jammers, Walt Disney Sports Complex, Madison Square Garden and Family First Sports Complex.

              Recommended Minors. Students are advised to select a minor that will complement the sport management major. Minors in Communication, Journalism, Accounting, Business Administration, Sport Administration and Communications are recommended to help our majors establish a strong academic base that will increase their employment opportunities. This program also serves as good preparation for students who wish to pursue graduate degrees in related fields. These related areas include sport psychology, sport counseling, business administration, management, higher education administration, athletic administration, and personnel management. 

                Employment Opportunities. Once you graduate potential employers will include professional sports teams, high school and college athletic departments, community based wellness and health promotion businesses, youth fitness organizations, parks and recreation agencies, sport complexes and arenas, retail sporting goods companies and family sports complexes.

  Dartfish is the most advanced video technology software available on the market today. Dartfish is used in our Video Technology course in which students learn the skills in filming, authoring and publishing.
