Academic Advising
Registration
Registration is conducted each semester prior to leaving for summer and winter recess. All students must register for at least 12 credit hours of academic course work via the web. Students should meet with their advisors and fill out the registration form. Students will then receive their PIN cards. Registration may be done in the EDP Computer Lab. The course offerings bulletin is also available on line. If you owe a bill over $100 and/or if your TAP is not finalized, you will NOT be allowed to register. A course load may not exceed 18 credit hours unless approved by the student’s advisor and dean. Courses and grades are available via the Internet at www.fredonia.edu, click on Your Connection

Diagnostic Assessment
All first-time students are required to take diagnostic assessments in reading, vocabulary, and written expression. Assessments are conducted for pre-freshman during summer orientation and again at the completion of their freshman year. Assessment results are used in combination with high school performance records in making recommendations for course work.
Liberal Arts Students
If a student has not declared a major in a particular discipline, he/she is considered to be a Liberal Arts student. The student will be assigned to an EDP counselor for advisement. Appointments for advisement and assistance in exploring the variety of majors, selecting a major, and understanding college procedures and policies should be set up with the EDP counselor. Once the major has been declared, the student is assigned a faculty advisor, but the EDP counselor is available to help with advising questions or issues throughout the student's time at Fredonia. The college's Academic Advising Center is also an excellent resource for any Liberal Arts questions. Back to Top
Students with a Declared Major
In addition to the assigned faculty advisor, the EDP counselor will assist in the development of course schedules and the interpretation of college policies and procedures. The student is responsible for maintaining frequent contact with both the EDP counselor and the faculty advisor who work together in monitoring the student's academic progress.
Probation
All students must adhere to college policies, standards, and procedures which have been established in regard to academic progress, probation, and dismissal. These standards and conditions are outlined and defined in the college catalog. The Educational Development Program has established added guidelines for academic progress in an attempt to identify and provide guidance to the students when experiencing academic difficulty which could lead to dismissal. All EDP students are expected to maintain an average level of academic achievement (2.0 cumulative GPA). This is not an unrealistic expectation considering that lower levels of progress do not provide an opportunity to improve an academic record. All students with less than a 2.0 cumulative GPA are placed on probation with the Educational Development Program and with the college. They must adhere to a probation contract designed by their counselor and/or the student's department. The contract is signed by the student upon his/her review. Contract guidelines vary with each individual and the severity of the academic record. Probation contracts may require mandatory tutoring and/or course work, more frequent counselor visitations, and attendance at group counseling sessions. Minimum semester grade requirements for obtaining an average level (2.0 cumulative GPA) of achievement are established in each contract. If the student does not sign the contract or adhere to guidelines agreed upon once the contract has been signed, the student is then subject to review by the director of the Educational Development Program. Support may then be relinquished when the academic record becomes so irreparable that dismissal is recommended. Workshops are offered each semester to give students study aids in achieving academic success. Students are also given Academic Warning contracts as a cautionary reminder that they are nearing probation status. Back to Top
Schedule Changes
All drops, adds, and course withdrawals must be approved by the EDP counselor to ensure that the student maintains an appropriate course load and does not jeopardize financial aid. Student should meet with their counselor to discuss such schedule changes. The procedure for such changes can be found in the college catalog.
