Top Ten Terrible Topics*
These are topics that for one reason or another I
have
a hard time reading and responding to. Perhaps the topics are too
trite (look it up!), too personal, too controversial, or too
conventional
to be approached with a fresh outlook. That is not to say that
you
can't write an effective paper on one of these topics. I'm just
saying
that you'll need to come up with a bang-up rhetorical situation from
which
to approach it.
10. Otters are
interesting (these papers usually have no point)
9. Everyone Needs Friends (the proposition is already universally
accepted)
8. My God is an Awesome God (or any papers that use religion as main means of support)
7. My
Struggles with Depression/Eating Disorders (these are usually narrative papers)
6. I Can't Stand My Roomate/Dorm (again, a narrative)
5. My Family Vacation (a paper that has no focus)
4. Ballet/Hockey/Basketball/Cheerleading is My
Life! (papers usually have no point)
3. I Love My Fraternity/Sorority (trite)
2. Abortion/Gun Control/Capital Punishment (no fresh approach is possible)
1. A Very Traumatic Experience--Date Rape,
Suicide
Attempt, etc (too personal to be assessed sensitively).
