Welcome to English 101.10, Language and Composition I.  This is a course that enhances your critical thinking and writing skills as well as prepares you to write at the college level across the curriculum. I hope you enjoy trying different kinds of assignments that are designed to challenge you and make you think about your writing because that's what you'll be doing.

The writing we will do demands that you try out new voices, speak to new audiences, explore new subjects, and create new ways of saying things—all in order to enhance and expand your own style.  In more practical terms, this exploration will take the form of about one finished paper every other week that will be accompanied by an analysis in which you will analyze your own work.

I..   Required Texts:
  • Course Guide for English 101:  Language and Composition I.  Department of English, Illinois State University.
  • The Redbird Reader:  A Collection of Student Writing from Language and Composition.  Department of English, Illinois State University.
  • The Mercury Reader, compiled by Jan Neuleib.  Illinois State University.

II. Course Requirements
The following activities and assignments are required, which means that they must be completed in order for you to earn a complete grade.  Incomplete work may cause you to fail this course.
III.  General Policies
Of course, the information you receive from these sources will be less complete than if you were actually in class.  Just avoid the whole mess and be here.
