Brian Cambourne—Conditions for Learning

·         Immersion—learners are immersed in the subject to be learned.  Material is presented in a variety of ways and more than once.  Different learning styles are validated.

·         Demonstration—the teacher shows or demonstrates the concepts to be learned, and learners are expected to demonstrate their knowledge to each other.

·         Expectation—the teacher provides detailed directions about exactly what learners are to learn or accomplish.  Learners do not have to guess what they are supposed to learn and thus become accountable for their work.

·         Responsibility—Learners have an opportunity to set their own agendas and report their learning to the class.  They are active learners who are invested in their own learning even if they are indifferent to the topic.

·         Use—Learners have time to practice their new learning in a variety of ways (independently, with “coaches,” with each other) .

·         Approximation—Learners should not be penalized for not mastering new material immediately.  Teachers should create a risk-free environment.

·         Response—Learners must receive honest but positive feedback in a timely manner.
