Four Samples to the Evidence of Engagement Section

***************************************

This semester in Literacy and Technology, I have been actively engaged in reading course material, in class participation, and in class activities and projects.  I offer the following evidence in subsections to demonstrate my participation:

  • Web Board Posts.  In this subsection, I have included all my web board posts, which show that as I read course material, I actively thought about how the material would affect my classroom as a teacher.  I am also including my responses to others on their posts, which demonstrate my commitment to my classmates and to their learning process as well.
  • Record of Attendance.  As my attendance chart indicates, I was present for all but 2 classes, for which I offered legitimate explanations of my absence and turned in assignments prior to class time.  I was also a frequent contributor to class discussions.
  • Teaching Demo reflections.  After each teaching demo, I took the time to informally write down ideas I got from the demos, focusing on adaptations I could make of the lesson for different grade levels.
  • Daily activities and project peer critique.  In this section, I have included samples of work from teaching demonstrations, by both the course instructor and classmates.  These documents show that I was thoughtfully participating in the lessons so that I could offer constructive feedback for that day’s teacher and so that I could adapt the lessons for my own use.  I also collaborated with Jill on her project, offering her feed back that enabled her to revise her week-long unit plans into a more realistic two-week unit.

This evidence clearly shows that I have vigorously participated in the course and was actively engaged in course materials.

I have approached Literacy and Technology with an open attitude and serious dedication throughout the semester.  This class is extremely important for the development of my teaching skills because it instructs future educators on how to instruct according to modern standards.  It has provided fresh ideas on how to relate to all students, despite their varying strengths and needs.  It is due to this that I made it a point to attend every single class, as well as actively participate in the discussions that occurred.  To further prove my commitment this class, I have provided tangible evidence of my participation.  I have broken it down into the following sections:

Response to Webboard.  This section includes all of my online responses to the chapters assigned in Firek’s Ten Easy Ways to Use Technology in the English Classroom, as well as my comments on other student’s responses.

Daily Activities.  This evidence shows that I participated in the hands-on activities we would complete in class, which were usually inspired by a previously assigned chapter in our Firek readings.  (For example “Choose-your-own-Adventure Stories, personal websites, webquest research, various handouts received etc.)

Teaching Demonstrations.  In this section, I include the activities I completed for other student’s teaching demonstrations.  Although these demonstrations were not for a grade, it was important to participate because there was something fresh and insightful to be learned from each student’s lesson.  Some of the things included in the section will be handouts provided by the students, as well as my own personal free writes that they asked me to complete during their demonstrations.

This section signifies the diligence and effort that I brought consistently to the course.

During this course, I have been present in every class, and have participated for and during every lesson as best as I could. In this portfolio, I have the following in different sections to display my interaction and work throughout this course:

  • Professional Article. In this part, I have the proposal for my article, the first draft and the second draft. This shows that I have actively done what was assigned and spent time researching my topic and got into what I was writing about.
  • Web Board Posts. In this section, I have included all of the web posts that I posted online in response to our reading. This shows that I’ve done the assigned work, and that I took the time to understand what I was reading and respond to it, and to what other people wrote as well. This also shows that I care and am committed to shaping my future classroom.
  • Record of Attendance. As my attendance chart should show, I have not been absent or late to any of the classes. This also shows that I have been dedicated to this class, to the learning material and not missing anything. I care about what I am learning in this class and am working hard for it.
  • Unit and Teaching Demo Lesson Plans. In this section I have all the steps that I took to get ready for my teaching demo, and for the unit project. I spent a lot of time planning things out and trying to be creative. I also spent time researching and finding certain materials to help me.
  • Daily Activities and Project Peer Critique. In this part of my portfolio, I have included various materials from student and teacher lessons that we have completed. These also show that I have been participating and working hard for student and teacher alike, and that I have been learning many new things about technology and using it in the English classroom setting. I have also collaborated with Jason by giving him feedback on his unit project. This shows that I have been learning things, and that I am actively engaged in what the class is doing.

All of this evidence shows that I have been learning many new things about English and technology, and also that I have been actively participating this entire semester.
