Professional Experience

English Department, SUNY Fredonia

  • University Supervisor of Student Teachers; Spring 2007-present.  As a university supervisor, I observe student teachers in local schools, read and respond to their teaching journals, consult with their cooperating teachers, advise them on issues that arise during their experience, and assign the final grades for their internship. 
     
  • English Education Committee Member; Fall 2006-present.  Our committee recommends needed changes to the English Education program in order to make our program stronger and graduates more ready to enter their classrooms.  I also participate in yearly screening of teacher candidates prior to their professional year.
     
  • Development and Awards Committee; Fall 2006-present.  The DAC is responsible for approving faculty requests for funds, planning professional development events for faculty and graduate and undergraduate students, organizing the Mary Louise White Symposium, arranging for the awards ceremony in May.

 

English Education Program, Illinois State University

  • University Supervisor of Student Teachers; Spring 2002-2006.  As a university supervisor, I observed student teachers in local schools, read and responded to their weekly teaching journals, consulted with their cooperating teachers, advised them on issues that arose during their experiences, and assigned the final grades for their internship. 
     
  • Participant, Peoria Initiative; Spring 2003-2006.  The Peoria Initiative is a professional development school in a local urban school district.  Cadres of student teachers, cooperating teachers, and university supervisors met semi-monthly to provide extra support for the student teacher interns by discussing issues relevant to teaching in urban settings. 
     
  • Researcher, Cooperating Teachers’ Orientation Program; 2003-2004.  This grant-funded program was developed in order to advise the Director of English Education on the needs of cooperating and student teachers during the student teaching experience.  My co-researcher, Dr. Becca Chase, and I met throughout the academic year with a group of high school English teachers to discuss their roles as mentors of student teaching interns.  I helped plan the discussion topics, took notes on the meetings, and will co-author an article in a scholarly publication.
     
  • English Education Committee Member; 2001-2006.  The committee recommended needed changes to the English Education program in order to make the program stronger and graduates more ready to enter their classrooms.  During my service, the committee recommended and implemented more rigorous standards for acceptance into the English Education program in order to ensure the quality of the graduates.

Writing Program, Illinois State University

  • Assistant Writing Program Administrator; 2003-2006.  My main role as a Program Assistant was to consult and advise new writing instructors.  To that end, I assisted with English 400, the introductory course for new graduate instructors, read and responded to weekly teaching journals, observed instructors, dealt with issues as they arose in classrooms, and trained undergraduate teaching assistants.  I also helped plan monthly professional development events and conducted monthly meetings for my discussion group members.
     
  • Co-Chair, Ewing English Studies Symposium Planning Committee; April 2005.  This annual symposium provided an opportunity for graduate students and professors from both the Communications Department and English Department to present recent research and discuss their collaboration in the General Studies Program.  As a co-chair, I helped write the call for proposals, review and accept proposals, and organize the program schedule.
     
  • Planning Committee Member, Ewing English Studies Symposium; April 2004.  The annual symposium provided an opportunity for graduate students and professors in the English Department to present recent research.  As a committee member, I helped review and accept proposals and organize the program schedule.

Illinois State Writing Project, Illinois State University 

  • Technology and Writing Workshop Coordinator; Spring 2005.  This grant-funded program allowed me to provide professional development opportunities to teachers in a local urban school.  I offered three workshops incorporating writing and technology with teaching demonstrations and hands-on activities.
     
  • Technology Liaison; 2003-2006.  During the Summer Institute for the Writing Project, I am responsible for leading weekly workshops on integrating technology in the writing classroom.   Topics include digital cameras and video cameras, website design and development, webboards, blogs, and AlphaSmarts.  I also maintain the ISWP’s website.  
     
  • Summer Institute Participant; 2002.  As a participant, I have a continuing commitment to the Illinois State Writing Project and do teaching demonstrations at various conferences and workshops.

Educational Testing Services, Princeton, New Jersey

  • Table Leader, Advanced Placement Literature and Composition Exam, 2006-present.  Educational Testing Services promotes exam readers based on experiences and recommendations of other table leaders.  This supervisory position allows table leaders input on scoring guidelines as well as on their interpretation and application during the reading.
     

  • Faculty Consultant, Advanced Placement Literature and Composition Exam, 2000-2005.  Educational Testing Services hires qualified Faculty Consultants to score the essays on the Advanced Placement exams.  The reading offers teachers opportunities to network with other professionals, voice concerns over testing procedures and topics, and assess College Board programs.
