Two-Person
Story/Style
A story is a narrative, a series of related events told
in an engaging way. Sometimes writers tell of events that
seem to be unrelated to the main plot, but can offer insight into the character
or which at a later time become important. Think of the light
falling at the beginning of The Truman Show.
So let's spend some time practicing turning seemingly
unrelated events into a story. I'll give you a series of
events and you'll have 15 minutes to begin a story in which you'll begin to
connect these events in some logical fashion. After that
time, you'll exchange with another student, read the story you're given, and
continue it from there, trying to maintain the original author's plot AND
style. So you've got to pay attention to the style the other
person uses so that you can imitate it. Ideally, we shouldn't
be able to tell where one person left off and the other
started.
Ready to try it? Here are your
unrelated events:
A ringing phone. A breaking
mirror. A man cutting himself shaving.
