Seaway NExT workshop
April 23, 2010

Seaway NExT, a program of the Seaway Section of the Mathematical Association of America, is a regional version of the national Project NExT program. Project NExT is “a professional development program for new or recent Ph.D.s in the mathematical sciences. It addresses all aspects of an academic career: improving the teaching and learning of mathematics, engaging in research and scholarship, and participating in professional activities. It also provides the participants with a network of peers and mentors as they assume these responsibilities” (from the Project NExT web page ).

Seaway NExT is a great way to develop local contacts and to share and hear ideas about the challenges and opportunities for new faculty.

Each spring, on a Friday afternoon just prior to the semiannual Seaway Section meeting, Seaway NExT holds a workshop with another organization, PFF (Preparing Future Faculty). The topics (usually two per workshop) vary and are chosen based on member interest. However, they always revolve around teaching and other aspects of professional life for mathematics professors. Anyone in the section (not just new faculty or recent PhD's!) with an interest in discussing such topics is encouraged to attend. There is no cost to participate in the Seaway NExT/PFF workshop.

For the Spring 2010 workshop one of the topics was Time Management Strategies. Some of the materials from the session are archived here for easy reference. Taken together, they give a fairly good idea of what the session was like, although they also provide information on several topics that we did not actually have time to discuss.
