Award Letter Questions and Answers

Q: How do I know if an award is actual?A: As long as the Financial Aid Office has not requested any additional information your awards are actual and (with the exception of Work Study) can be used toward college charges.Q: What do I have to do to change estimated awards to actual awards?A: Different procedures are required for different types of aid. See the following:
  • TAP - make sure you apply by completing the pre-printed Express TAP Application and the FAFSA/Renewal FAFSA.
  • PELL - the Pell Grant is automatically made actual unless you were selected for verification by federal edits. Verification would have to be completed in order for those selected to have their Pell Grants made actual.
  • STAFFORD - Compete the Fredonia Master Promissory Note you receive from New York State Higher Education Services Corporation(NYSHESC) as soon as possible and send it directly back to NYSHESC. The Stafford will be actual on our system only after an approval from the quarantor is received.
  • PERKINS,EOP,SEOG,CWSP - Return the Verification Worksheet and copies of requested tax returns.
Q: I have a scholarship that is not listed on my Award Letter. What should I do?A: Send documentation regarding the student's name and social security number, the name and address of the scholarship donor, the scholarship amount, the scholarship duration, and the fact it is paid directly to the college on behalf of the student to the Financial Aid Office.Q: Why didn't I receive the full Stafford Student Loan?A: Stafford Loan eligibility is based on date recieved from the FAFSA/Renewal FAFSA, the total cost of attending Fredonia, and other grants, loans, scholarships, or work study awarded.Q: How do I use my financial aid to pay the college charges?A: For the Fall semester charges you may use actual listed amounts of Fall TAP, PELL, Perkins, EOP, SEOG, and Stafford as credit. As the money arrives on campus during the semester it will be applied to your bill by the Office of Student Accounts. For the Spring semester charges you may use actual amounts of Spring TAP, PELL, Perkins, EOP, SEOG, and Stafford as credit.Q: If I can't use the Federal Work Study as a credit toward college charges, how do I recieve that award?A: The Work Study Award is an actual job, at which you will work approximately eight hours each week, and receive a check every two weeks for hours worked.Q: How do I know where my work study job will be?A: You will be notified in July as to the assignment procedures and you must meet with your supervisor during the first two days of classes to discuss work hours and job duties.Q: What if I don't meet with my supervisor by the deadline?A: Your work study job will be canceled and awarded to another student.Q: Why didn't I receive a Work Study job, SEOG or Perkins Loan?A: The award criteria varies slightly for each program. You might be eligible for one type but not the other two, or you might be eligible for none. The criteria consists of "need", date of application completion, and funds available, to name a few.Q: I wasn't awarded Work Study. How do I get a part-time job now?A: Apply at various departments or offices on campus for non-work study jobs. Many off campus businesses in the area hire students as part-time employees. Apply at each location.Q: This seems like a lot of work I have to do. What if I mess up and forget to do something on time? A: It is your responsibility to understand what you're applying for and how and when each step must be completed. You run the risk of not receiving the correct financial aid if you don't keep copies of applications completed or forget to do something on time.
