President's Message

Dear Friend:

Dr. Denis HefnerSUNY Fredonia shares a unique relationship with Chautauqua County and Western New York. In addition to fulfilling its educational mission, the campus is an invaluable resource for information, economic development, entertainment and thought leadership. Cultural offerings and athletic events draw visitors from throughout the region and beyond, as faculty and students become ingrained in the community. Together, we all work to build a better world through research projects, volunteer campaigns and service learning initiatives – all for the mutual benefit of our governments, businesses, organizations and every day citizens.

Local residents have always played a part in the university’s success; in fact, their support was vital when the Fredonia Academy opened in 1826. Today, as the 6th largest employer in Chautauqua County, it generates over $370 million in economic activity annually. Students spend approximately $43 million locally every year, with many continuing to contribute to the area upon graduating. A majority of Fredonia alumni reside and pursue careers in communities across New York State, enhancing the economic and social vitality of their regions.

SUNY Fredonia continues to evolve as an institution, and that progress leads to broader community benefits too. Nowhere has this been more evident than with the new SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator, which has bridged unprecedented partnerships between the university, government and economic development entities. It is operating well ahead of its initial projections, and we are honored and privileged to have the resources and trust to lead such meaningful economic change within our region.

Other capital improvements are also underway, highlighted by the new, $60 million Fredonia Science Center, which began construction in the summer of 2011. This facility, when completed in 2013, will elevate our natural sciences to a level more fitting the talented faculty, students and alumni Fredonia has in these increasingly influential academic disciplines. Additional construction projects include a major renovation to our campus’ student union, The Williams Center, and our often-visited Rockefeller Arts Center, as well as new student town houses and a fitness center. Initiatives like these create well-paying local jobs, increase local spending, and stimulate long-term relationships and commerce.

As an institution of remarkable quality and equally impressive value, SUNY Fredonia proudly reaffirms its motto,“Where Success is a Tradition.” This is our home, and we pledge to continue to lead the region in the ever-important areas of economic growth, educational excellence and community service.

Sincerely,

Denis Hefner signature
