*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*EARTH WEEK 2013: Wasting AwayApril 13th - April 22nd, 2013We have become a disposable society. From food packaging to beverage bottles to cheap plastic lawn chairs, we manufacture goods with the explicit intention of simply throwing them away. But the problem is… there is no away. We live here, on this one single planet, with limited resources and finite surface area. It is not possible to continuously run a one-way path (i.e., single-use, disposable society) on finite resources. Every year we use more resources than the natural cycles of the earth can create, and each year the situation gets worse. We are currently consuming 1.5 earths per year, but we only have ONE. As a result we are hitting the walls: going to extremes to continue our fossil fuel habit, all the while climate change is wreaking havoc across the globe, our oceans are filled with plastic, but devoid of fish, and our bodies are filled with synthetic chemicals that are affecting our very ability to exist. We are, as a society, as a species, WASTING AWAY… SUNY Fredonia's Earth Week series is intended to provide activities and educational events to raise awareness of the breadth of sustainability issues facing our society and provide the tools necessary to reduce our negative impact upon our home.
SUNY Fredonia has had a history of celebrating Earth Day since its origins in 1970. In 2008, we greatly expanded and institutionalized this celebration as Earth Week, primarily as a voice to the then newly created Sustainability Committee. In 2010, through a collaboration with the SUNY FACE (Fredonia Academic Community Engagement) Center, we took our community engagement and educational outreach activities to a whole new level. Now in its 6th year, the Earth Week series has become one of the largest and most prominent annual events on the SUNY Fredonia campus. Making An Impact: Earth Week Stats
