Environmental benefits include conserving energy by eliminating the need to heat water for tray washing, saving one-third to one-half gallon of water per tray and creating less food waste in landfills.
Economic benefits to consider are saving costs on water and energy, eliminationg the cost of purchasing new trays and reducing food removal costs.
There are also personal perks that can be considered by simply going trayless. By not picking up a tray, students are more conscious about the food they are taking in the dining halls. Without trays, they are no longer able to pile on food that they won't be eating. Making students conscious to this could potentially have a factor in preventing the dreaded "Freshman Fifteen". Plus students should just feel warm and fuzzy inside for doing something beneficial for the planet.
