 Academic Standings

Policy

Purpose: The purpose of the Graduate Academic Standing policy is to address both academic and non-academic graduate student deficiencies in a consistent, fair, and timely manner. 

Definitions:    

  • Academic deficiencies comprise poor course performance when a grade has not yet been assigned for the course, a course grade below 3.0 GPA, a cumulative GPA below 3.0, or other academic deficiencies as identified by the student's department.
  • Non-academic deficiencies comprise poor professional disposition, ethical violations, or other personal issues that interfere with program performance.

Policy

Purpose: The purpose of the Academic Leave policy is to ensure quality by providing continuity in the student's degree program and to provide a mechanism for obtaining appropriate academic leave.

Definitions:  Academic Leave is defined as an appropriate, approved period of non-enrollment during a graduate student's degree program.  Academic Leave will only be considered after a student has completed a minimum of one semester of graduate coursework.

Process

Students may apply for an academic leave at any time. 

Academic Leave forms will be available in department offices, the Graduate Studies Office, and the graduate studies website.  A student must fill out and sign the form and have it signed by his/her advisor, department chairperson, and the Dean of the College of Education (when appropriate).  The department will forward the form to the Associate Vice President for Graduate Studies & Research for signature.  Copies of the fully signed form will be sent to the student's department, the Registrar's Office, Student Accounts, and Financial Aid.

 Apply for Reinstatement

Process

Students must apply for reinstatement a minimum of four (4) weeks before the start of the desired readmission semester.
