In addition to the application process required by the Office of Graduate Studies, applicants seeking the Master of Music in Theory-Composition must interview with and be accepted by the appropriate music faculty.
The Master of Music in Theory/Composition is structured so that the student may place emphasis on either theory** or composition***.
** Applicants who choose a concentration in theory must present evidence of previous analytical work
*** Applicants who choose a concentration in composition must present a representative selection of compositions for evaluation
Admission Requirements:
- Bachelor of Music from an accredited four-year institution, with a concentration in theory or composition, or any other undergraduate music degree that includes four semester of music theory, a music history survey, and advanced undergraduate courses in theory, composition, orchestra, counterpoint, or music history totaling at least 12 semester hours
- Review of undergraduate analytical or compositional achievement through an on campus interview (see Graduate Audition Request Form)
- Minimum Undergraduate GPA 3.0 is preferred

This degree requires successful completion of 30 hours of coursework, which is divided between theory or composition courses, as well as history and studio instruction and electives. A thesis (theory project or composition) and comprehensive oral examination are also required.
