Add-Ons
Certification Areas:
Special Education Early Childhood EducationAlternate Pathways to Add-on Certifications
Working teachers often learn that they may earn add-on certification areas by transcript review, a direct-application-to-NYS Education Department process that is facilitated locally by a certification officer at Erie-2 BOCES. If you are interested:- Contact Mrs. Nancy Burns, Erie 2 BOCES, 8685 Erie Road, Angola, NY 14006. Phone: (716) 549-4454 or 1-800-228-1184 (within New York State). She will identify coursework that may qualify you for additional certification areas.
- Contact Dr. Anna Thibodeau, Chair of the Language, Learning, and Leadership department, to determine whether you will be allowed to enroll in the course(s) for this purpose. PLEASE NOTE: permission will only be granted in accordance with national accreditation and SUNY Fredonia standards and is not guaranteed.
- Fill out an online application for non-degree study at SUNY Fredonia. Before submitting, contact the Graduate Studies Office to ensure appropriate fee payment and to allow waiver of recommendation letters (recommendation letters are not required for non-degree study).
- Once you have been approved for non-degree study, registration instructions will be sent to your email address. Please note that you may have to obtain an override code from the College of Education (716-673-3701 or 716-673-3702) if the course is major-restricted.
Special Education (Students with Disabilities) Certification
Those students interested in obtaining initial certification in special education may take a four course cluster of graduate courses. Recommendation for certification would then come from the BOCES system.

Current Grad Students:
Register for the courses online through your connection or visit the Registrar's Office to register in-person.
New Students:
If you are only interested in the special education add-on then you would apply as a Non-Degree student using the online application system.
Returning Students:
If you have recently graduated with your Master's degree from Fredonia, and are interested in returning for the special education add-on, then you would complete the reinstatement application. You will be considered a Non-Degree student and need not re-apply as your graduate record still exists.
