Master of Science in Education: Biology 7-12

Whether your interests are in teaching, pre-medicine, molecular biology, ecology or any branch of biology, there is a program at Fredonia that will meet your needs.

Our programs prepare students for positions in industry and government labs, further study at the doctoral level, and qualify provisionally certified teachers for permanent certification in New York State.

 

Master of Science in Biology

These programs serve to prepare students for admission to Ph.D. programs in the biological and biomedical sciences, professional careers in the public and private sectors, technical work in education, medical and environmental settings, and teaching at the secondary education and two-year college levels.

Applicants to the M.S. in Biology program must have an undergraduate major in Biology or related science with requisite evidence of training and motivation necessary to succeed in graduate study. Supporting science background should include physics, calculus, and organic chemistry. Prospective students should forward Graduate Record Exam scores along with their application for admission consideration.

The degree comprises 30 credit hours of graduate level coursework with both a thesis and non-thesis option available.

Admission Requirements

  • An undergraduate major in the Life Sciences with requisite evidence of training and motivation necessary to succeed in graduate study.
  • Supporting science background to include physics, calculus, and organic chemistry.
  • The Graduate Record Exam is recommended. Please indicate that your scores be sent to SUNY Fredonia.

Master of Science in Education: Biology 7-12

Note: Students are no longer being accepted into this program. This section is provided for the students who are currently completing this degree. Incoming students should see Science Education for details on the Science Education Master of Arts in Teaching degree program.

Undergraduates who majored in Biology or related science with requisite evidence of training and motivation necessary to succeed in graduate study will benefit from this degree that provides the academic qualifications required for teaching certification in New York State.

Supporting science background should include physics, calculus, and organic chemistry. Prospective students should forward Graduate Record Exam scores along with their application for consideration.

Candidates must have initial certification to teach biology and general science in the secondary schools of New York State, or equivalent preparation.

The degree comprises 30 credit hours of graduate level coursework in Biology (or approved related area) and Education; a thesis, independent study project, or research project from either professional education or Biology; a two-part comprehensive written examination in the Biology areas of specialization and an examination covering the professional component of the student's program.
