This certificate allows the candidate to assume such roles as superintendent, principal, assistant principal, supervisor, department chairperson, or program coordinator.

The Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Leadership is available to candidates who already possess teaching certification, a Master's degree in education or a related field, and three years of satisfactory teaching or professional experience in a Pre-K-12 setting.

The program leads to a recommendation to the New York State Education Department for initial certification as a School Building Leader (SBL) or School District Leader (SDL).


School Building Leadership

Admission Requirements
  • NYSED teaching certification
  • Master's degree in education or related field with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Three years satisfactory teaching or professional experience in a Pre-K-12 school.
  • Two written recommendations from the candidate's school superintendent and immediate supervisor.
  • A completed graduate application.
Program Requirements
  • A minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate-level
    courses, including a 600-clock hour internship:

    EDU 615  School Building Leader

    EDU 616  Supervision I: Theory and Practice

    EDU 617  Supervision II: Supervision to Improve Instruction

    EDU 618  Internship I: Educational Leadership

    EDU 619  Internship II: Educational Leadership

    EDU 620  Public School Finance

    EDU 624  Contemporary Problems in School Leadership

    EDU 626  Public School Law

    EDU 630  Creating Safe and Productive Schools
  • Internship Portfolio providing evidence of the candidate's impact on students in a Pre-K-12 setting.
  • Comprehensive oral or written examination that covers the professional component of the students program, as determined by the advisor.

    EDU 664 School District Leadership Seminar: Media, Governance, and Crisis Management
