Sub-pages of a site maintained by Addison Wesley Longman publishers and intended to supplement F.X. Kennedy and Dana Gioia's Literature, 7th ed. This Hardy part is in four sections:

  1. "Biography" consists of twelve paragraphs subdivided into "Introduction," "Early Years," "Literary Career," and "Last Years and Legacy."
  2. "Critical Archive" gives a three-paragraph "Critical Overview" with mentions of such topics as sociological and historical interpretation; gender, formalist, and reader response criticism; as well as mythological inquiries.
  3. "Bibliography" supplies a selective list of principal works, biography, and criticism.
  4. "Links" provides an annotated list of thirty-three remote Hardy-related sites, with links (sometimes multiple) to them.

COMMENT:

Parts of this site vary greatly in quality and usefulness. The "Biography" section (like all the others, unsigned) is, for its length, a very good introductory summary. The "Critical Archive," however, is perfunctory, and key terms in it, such as formalist criticism, are undefined. "Bibliography" supplies a very full list of Hardy's principal works, and its biography part provides a well-considered selection; on the other hand, its list of criticism consists of only four works. The annotated "Links" page includes some of the better Hardy sites on the web, but, also, many other less reliable ones, whose weaknesses, great and small, go largely unnoted. Those sites are all more fully described and evaluated in this TTHA "Links" section. With respect to the "Project Gutenberg" and "Bibliomania" e-texts, as well as the pictures this "Literature Online" site provides links to, see our
GENERAL CAUTION.
