The master, Dave Sands, is the former owner, now retired, of The Paper Shop in Dorchester. The purpose of this site is to provide information for those interested in Hardy and Dorchester. It is in part a guide for first-time foreign visitors to Dorchester, with emphasis on the basics of getting to and around the town, its environs, and Hardy-related sites; in part it is a bulletin board for information about events in Dorset for those interested in Hardy; in part, it is a miscellany of other Hardy-related materials, including information about various services. The site has the following main divisions:

  1. "Getting to Dorchester" provides information on train, bus, and taxi service, as well as information about using British telephones.
  2. "Hardy's Places" consists of some pictures of scenes connected with Hardy.
  3. "Getting Around" supplies details about the Dorchester Tourist Office, taxi availability, and car hire service.
  4. "Books & Guides" gives titles of and comment on books about Dorchester and the Hardy Country, and offers to facilitate purchase of any books shown.
  5. "Photographs" consists of several pages of enlargable pictures of landmarks around and about Dorset. Directions for getting to these places are planned to be added.
  6. "Cross-in-Hand" provides photographs and the text of "The Lost Pyx."
  7. "Where to Stay" recommends four B&B's, for which pictures, advertising blurbs, phone, and email information are provided, as well as access to Smoooth Hound Systems' hotel and guest house directory.
  8. "Hardy News" provides current announcements and other Hardy-related information.
  9. A "Jim Gibson Page" devoted to original contributions from Dr. Gibson, including a comments on The Woodlanders, Beeny Cliff, The St. Juliot Rectory, Fanny Hurden and "The Darkling Thrush,"--many with pictures.
  10. Links to a page maintained by "MasterTexts.com" and to web pages for Japaneese readers.
In addition, there is a map of Great Britain which locates Dorchester, and pages related to such matters as Dorset wild flowers and the William Barnes Society, as well as separate listings for more current topics such as Hardy Conference news and pictures.

COMMENT:

An exceptionally useful site that unfortuntely, since Dave Sands' retirement, will not be so frequently updated. For comment on the links to the page maintained by "MasterTexts.com," and the pages for Japaneese readers, see our Links A 195 and A 174 respectively. For a review of this site, see our Link A 14.
