Project Gutenberg is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating and freely distributing ASCII e-texts that are prepared by volunteers. This opening Project Gutenberg page allows for both browsing and searching the collection by title or author. Specific texts are located at various FTP sites throughout the world; the default site is the University of North Carolina, USA, but visitors can select other FTP sites closer to their own locations. An author search for "Hardy" yielded citations of thirty-two records involving such texts as A Changed Man and Other Tales, Desperate Remedies, A Group of Noble Dames. Life's Little Ironies, Satires of Circumstance, Time's Laughingstocks and Other Verses, The Trumpet Major, Two on a Tower, Under the Greenwood Tree, Wessex Tales, A Pair of Blue Eyes, Far from the Madding Crowd (two versions), Jude the Obscure, Tess of the d'Urbervilles, The Mayor of Casterbridge, The Return of the Native, Wessex Tales, The Well-Beloved, The Dynasts, A Laodicean, Moments of Vision, Poems of the Past and the Present, Late Lyrics and Earlier and The Woodlanders. All are available either in zipped or unzipped format.

COMMENT:

A preface to each Project Gutenberg text usually provides information on who prepared it (including an e-mail address) and how it was produced, but it may not supply full bibliographic information about the printed text which the Project Gutenberg e-text was intended to reproduce. Those print texts, said to be in the public domain but sometimes not identified, are often not appropriate for scholarly reference, and the e-texts derived from them can vary greatly in their reliability. See our
GENERAL CAUTION for further comment on such texts.
