Peter Morton is Senior Lecturer in English at Flinders University of South Australia. He is the author of The Vital Science: Biology and the Literary Imagination 1860-1900 (London: Allen and Unwin,1984). This page provides the text of that book, Chapter 7 of which is titled, "The Body is an Omnibus: The Motif of Heredity in The Way of All Flesh and Tess of the d'Urbervilles." Also provided is an extensive bibliography on Darwinism and literature.
