Thomas Hardy's Library at Max Gate: Catalogue of an Attempted Reconstruction

DESCRIPTION:

Address: http://www.library.utoronto.ca/fisher/hardy/
Contact: Michael Millgate ( michael.millgate@utoronto.ca )
Date: 07/01/04

A catalogue identifying so far as possible the books in Thomas Hardy's Max Gate library at the time of his death in January 1928. Entries are arranged alphabetically and include information on bookplates, autographs, annotations, and present or last known locations, and identify sources--e.g., auction catalogues--used for information when the book itself was not able to be located.

COMMENT:

An exeptionally valuable catalogue which supplements the extant Hardy notebooks as a source of information about Hardy's reading. In addition, the introductory material provides useful information about the bookplates found in many of the library copies and about the history of the library itself.
