Notes for a university-level lecture on Jude the Obscure by Peter Morton, Senior Lecturer in English, Flinders University, Adelade, Australia. The notes are divided into three main parts:

  1. "Brief remarks on relevant parts of Hardy biography relevant to Jude";
  2. "The 'sexual quadrille' (a dance for 4)--phrase of M. Millgate's";
  3. "Hardy's concept of fate and world view expressed in the novel."

COMMENT:

These notes--not a coherent lecture--are in the form of brief phrases or sentences, of which those on "The Sexual Quadrille" are most extensive.
