THE WORLD OF THOMAS HARDY (JAPAN)

DESCRIPTION:

Address: http://www.netlaputa.ne.jp/~karen/
Contact: Karen Naganuma (karen@NetLaputa.ne.jp)
Date: 07/01/04

The master, Karen Naganuma, is a member of the UK Thomas Hardy Society. The site is located in Japan and is primarily in Japanese. It is divided into six main parts:

  1. "A Brief History of Thomas Hardy"
  2. includes a biographical note and a chronology.
  3. "Works of Thomas Hardy"
  4. is coded so that fiction titles are in blue, short stories in pink, and poetry in green. Hyperlinks to plot summaries are provided for Tess and Jude.
  5. "The Characteristics of Hardy's Works"
  6. includes comment on pessimism, coincidence, and Wessex in Hardy's writings.
  7. "Wessex"
  8. consists of an outline map of Hardy's "Wessex," except for "Off Wessex." Presently, nine photographs of sites in "South Wessex" are included; these may be enlarged by clicking on them.
  9. "A List of Literature on Hardy" is a brief bibliography of writings about Hardy.
  10. "Other Sites on Hardy"
  11. includes links to four remote sites.

COMMENT:

This site is intended as a general introduction for persons unfamiliar with Hardy, and Hardy himself is represented as conducting the visitor around the site. Except for some English headings for its six major parts, the text and captions are in Japanese.

All except two of the remote links are accessible from this TTHA site as well. The sites not linked from here include one devoted to the city of Oxford (with information on, and a picture of, the Lamb and Flag pub that has been associated with a setting in Jude) and a second related to Gustav Holst's tone poem titled Egdon Heath.

I am grateful to Karen Naganuma for providing much of the above detail--Robert Schweik.
