A four-page essay on Thomas Hardy's novels, with ten footnotes and a six-item bibliography.

COMMENT:

A naive and rambling undergraduate paper on fate and sympathy in Hardy's Under the Greenwood Tree, The Mayor of Casterbridge, and Jude the Obscure. It is replete with banal observations expressed in confusing syntax and punctuation, such as in this example: [Jude's] position in the world, as an intelligent boy from a poor background prevents his entry into Christminster (Oxford) University, is an example of the world's faceless and impersonal disregard for him and his ambitions and desires.
