THOMAS HARDY COUNTRY: A PHOTOGRAPHIC TOUR

DESCRIPTION:

Address: http://members.aol.com/thardy1001/
Contact: W. Robert Seitz (rseitz1009@aol.com)
Date: 24/10/03

This site provides photographs of scenes related to Hardy's life and work, nearly all taken by W. Robert Seitz. Most are arranged in seven sequences accessed by clicking on pictures labled "The Hardy Cottage," "Stinsford Church," "Dorchester," "A Frome Walk," "Tess Country," "Puddletown," and "Miscellany." The sequences include not only pictures but various brief commenataries on such topics as "The Bockhampton of Hardy's Youth," "Admiral Hardy and His Monument," and "Thomas Hardy's Gargoyle." There is also a "Clickable Map" with hyperlinks to the same seven picture sequences, a page providing a list of credits and bibliographic references, an index to the pictures, a reproduction of the 1906 Bertram Windle map of Wessex, and a page of links to eight remote Hardy-related sites.

In addition, there are special sections titled "Hardy in London" and "Tryphena Sparks." The former provides a brief account of Hardy's lodgings in London, with pictures of No. 16 Pelham Crescent where the Hardys resided on two occasions. The latter is a survey of what is known of Tryphena Sparks and a comparative summary of the different treatments given her by major biographers.

Finally, there is also a free download of a "Hardy Country Screen Saver," with choices of some scenes from among the photographs available on this site.

COMMENT:

The pictures are nearly all of excellent quality and are relatively large. Identifications are accurate, and the supplementary commentaries, precise and helpful, include relevant quotations from Hardy's texts and appropriate references to secondary sources. The photographs and related notes are copyrighted by W. Robert Seitz unless otherwise attributed. The commentary on Tryphena Sparks is informed and judicious.
