The home page of Phillip V. Mallett, Senior Lecturer, The School of English, University of St Andrews, Fife, Scotland. Provides access to material relating to two honours modules, including hyperlinks to summaries of lectures on Jude the Obscure and The Mayor of Casterbridge, as well as to a short review essay titled "Lives of Thomas Hardy", to pages titled "Thomas Hardy Resource Library", and to "Thomas Hardy and the Boer War."

COMMENT:

Contains useful pedagogical material. The lecture summary on Jude the Obscure focuses on Sue Bridehead; it calls attention to the narrator's sympathies with some of his contemporaries' feminist views and argues that the novel "shows TH at his most radical." The "Lives of Thomas Hardy" review, prepared for the St. James Press Guide to Biography, is an excellent critical assessment of Hardy biography up to and including Millgate's of 1982, but does not include more recent biographies.
