A sub-page of a site maintained by the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute, a partnership intended to strengthen teaching and learning in local schools. Provides the text of a curriculum unit guide, written by Maureen C. Howard, as part of "An Interdisciplinary Approach to British Studies" published in 1981. The guide is for a curriculum unit for teaching The Return of the Native to senior high school students, with special emphasis on its mythic elements. The text is divided into the following parts:

  1. "Narrative" provides an extended discussion of the mythic elements in the novel.
  2. "Performance Objectives" states ten teaching goals.
  3. "General Activities" offers sample questions and activities for teaching the novel.
  4. "Discussion Guide" supplies a series of suggested questions students may be asked about the novel.

Other parts include "Introduction to the Victorian Era," "The Model Female," "Introduction to the British Literary Village," "Bibliography for Village Research," "Country Customs in The Return of the Native," "Suggested Reading List for Students," and "Bibliography."

COMMENT:

Maureen C. Howard is not further identified. The material provided is extensive--over thirty pages as presented by a Netscape 4.6 browser. Although now in many respects outdated--the concluding four-page bibliography includes materials only from 1919 to 1977--much of the comment is thoughtful and the suggestions still may be helpful.
