A documented essay of about six pages and fifteen sources titled "The Similar Philosophies of Thomas Hardy and Arthur Schopenhauer."
COMMENT:
The master/author, associated with World Ramp Internet Services,
describes himself as a "non-racist skinhead philosopher." The essay is in part derivative, though the sources cited include none later than 1966 and omit some major discussions of Hardy and Schopenhauer. The study is also flawed by oversimplifications and by findings of the influence of Schopenhauer where other sources are more likely. For example, Sue Bridehead's cry, "Self-renunciation-that's everything!" (Jude vi,3)--uttered after her return from St. Silas church--is said by Hogan to reflect Schopenhauer's ideas. But the context involves Sue's church-going, and her other assertions--e.g., that "We should mortify the flesh . . . the curse of Adam"--strongly suggest Hardy was attempting to render the influence on Sue of Christian ideas of submission to God's will rather than those of Schopenhauer.
