This page is part of a University of Toronto English Library site. It leads to an index to sixteen Hardy poems reproduced, copyright information, a three-item bibliography, and a single-paragraph "Note on Life and Works." Individual pages supply an e-text, source identification, date of composition, date of first book publication, and some explanatory notes. Poem texts reproduced are "At Lulworth Cove a Century Back," "Channel Firing," "The Convergence of the Twain," "The Darkling Thrush," "The Dead Man Walking," "Fragment," "In the Study," "In Tenebris [I]," "In Time of 'The Breaking of Nations,'" "The Man He Killed," "The Masked Face," "No Buyers," "The Ruined Maid," "The To-be-forgotten," "The Voice," and "'When I Set Out for Lyonnesse.'"

COMMENT:

The names of the particular editor or editors of the Hardy poems are not supplied, and, although the texts of the poems are said to be "normally based on the books or manuscripts in which they originally appeared," the source of the Hardy poems is stated to be a 1932 printing of the Macmillan Collected Poems of Thomas Hardy. There are some inaccuracies: Michael Millgate's Thomas Hardy: A Biography, for example, is incorrectly cited as having seven volumes. On using these e-texts for scholarly purposes, see our GENERAL CAUTION.
